Valuable Toys, Books, and Games

Okay, please send all your readers this way.  And please if you ever read this blog leave a comment.  In the next two months before our kiddos arrive we are trying to come up with some great children’s toys, books, and games.  So what sticks out in your minds as great items to have around the house for a 6 year old boy and a 5 year old girl in the following categories:

Toys-What did you most play with at these ages, or what do your children most play with at these ages?

Games-What games should every parent have in their game cupboard for 5-6 year old kiddos?

Books-What are the must haves?  We’ll be frequenting the library quite often but which ones should we actually own?

Educational-Help please!  I am planning on home schooling the kids and I would love ideas on creative educational tools.  *No curriculum suggestions please, we’re not buying any program for kindergarden.*  Just looking for the things every home school family should have on hand.

Thanks!

  • Even with homeschooling, I’d suggest checking out a teacher’s store if there’s one near where you live. They’ll have a lot of books, educational games, and other books and manipulatives that could help you out in all of those areas!!

  • So I’ve worked at our college’s private Christian Pre-k through 1st grade program since my freshmen year, so I work with 3-7 year olds a lot. Here’s a lot of what we’ve used and gathered in the classrooms:

Toys- Either duplos, legos, or constructs (major fun to put together).

    Games- Shutes and ladders, Candyland

Books- The Pokey Little Puppy, The Little Engine that Could, Hand Hand Fingers Thumb, Chickachicka Boom Boom, I Went Walking

Educational- A book of activities is always good… And there are always printable activities that you can find online, books with tapes, sing-a-long tapes

  • I have tons of art supplies – play doh, paint and fingerpaint, markers, crayons, etc. I buy paper in big rolls (like the kind to cover tables) and tape it on the floor or table and color and paint away with my girls. You can get pom poms and other fun things at the dollar store. Those are my thoughts!

  • The paper that Patty is talking about is called Butcher Paper, you can get that at the teacher store that Linsdey talked about. I too think that would be a great resource btw. I’ve thought about going myself to get things for Malachi’s room.
